DAY 2 CONTINUATION INTERIM RESULTS WATERLOO CUP 2019
On to day 2 of the finale meeting of the 2019 coursing season. Once again, we struck a great day weather wise for coursing. The sun was out and shining although there were a few clouds but none of those elements that are generally associated with the winter months.
To the Longwood Coursing Club a huge thankyou as everything went to plan. One needs to realise that all the input at coursing clubs is by volunteers. The track, the surrounding course, the canteen, all of the facilities are maintained by a small group. It can be hard going at times but generally the job gets done.
So who won what? Once again there were some close finishes which left us all waiting and the edge of our seats for the judge’s flag to signify the winner.
The Waterloo Cup is the oldest event in Victorian greyhound’s history, first being contested in 1873. This was out 146th running of this event. Paul Abela this year’s winning trainer, got his first taste of coursing and once you get a taste for it and it gets into your blood it is mighty hard to get it out. Yes, Paul has said he’ll be back next year and all that can be said to that is You betcha. Last year’s Waterloo Cup winning trainer, Ray Henness who won with Bear Left was a first timer in 2018 and he came back. These cups are hard to win once, and it could be said that every trainer attending the meeting today would love to win just one.

To our supporters both trainers and owners a huge thank you we hope to see you back in the 2020 season and one would hope that we have a clear vision, after all it is 2020.
DAY 1 WATERLOO CUP 2019
FIRST DAY INTERIM RESULTS WATERLOO CUP 2019
Once again, the weather gods smiled on coursing and there was not a cloud to be seen and as for any precipitation, none of that either. The perfect day and we’re hoping for another one tomorrow to complete our finale of coursing for the 2019 season.
The track was expertly prepared and ready for the day, as was the food expertly organised by and dispensed at the centrally located canteen.
On to the main event of the day, the coursing. There were some really close and great courses during all rounds over the day with some greyhounds expected to go deep into the event but were beaten early and sent to the consolation events.

As usual there was some fun to be had at someone else’s expense. You never know what amusing things can happen at a coursing event and apart from the seriousness of the actual courses and events, most people have encountered each other during the season.
One Kyabram based trainer who shall remain nameless was left in a dizzy state with one greyhound after being defeated in its course, slipping its lead. The greyhound decided to run after the lure on the wrong side of the track. No harm done and greyhound was vet checked and cleared of any injury. The Bendigo based trainer who managed to catch the greyhound yelled out the Kyabram based trainer that it was his greyhound that had slipped its lead after winning its course. It wasn’t his greyhound but his turn of phrase was something that we all had a greyhound laugh at.
Another funny event at an earlier Lang Lang coursing meeting occurring in the observation yard. Now anyone who’s been to Lang Lang knows that it is situated within the native bush of that area. Loud and clear a kookaburra starting laughing, of which no one took any notice, the greyhounds didn’t either. Our English born steward looked quite surprised, eyes wide open in amazement and asked “What is that noise was?” Trainers, the vet and other stewards in the immediate area all looked around and one trainer said “What noise?” We had to explain that the noise heard was that of an Australian native bird called a Kookaburra. The look on the face of the Englishwoman was priceless.
Signing off and hoping for an awesome day tomorrow Sunday.
On Saturday the 20th and Sunday 21st July the Benalla Plumpton Coursing Club conducted the Victorian Derby, Oaks and Benalla Cup with support stakes. After a few minor hiccups on Saturday, the continuation on Sunday was run at a genuine pace with the final course being conducted at 4.15pm in beautiful winter weather. Results were Derby winner Mr. Brian Fothergill’s black dog Barracuda Fozz was a brilliant winner and defeated Mr Glass’ Close To Carnage. Consolation No 1. of the Derby was won by Grudge, runner up Mortadella. Derby Consolation No 2. was won by Imperial Jack, runner up Winlock Jetty. Oaks winner was Mr Gavin Clifton’s beautiful bitch Magic Marcia defeating Emerley Express in slashing style. Oaks Consolation No. 1. was taken out by Van Evie defeating Priscilla Wang. Oaks Consolation No 2 winner was Golden Banjo who def Brilliant Jet. Next was our Cup winner, this was another great win for Bees On Fire who defeated last year’s Waterloo Cup winner in Bear Left. The GOTBA winner was Golden Fernando who defeated Lonesome Spring. Event 3 the Thank You John Radic was taken out by Faraday who defeated Racecourse Road. Event 4 the Farmers Arms Hotel went to Gehrig who defeated Soda Flash. Event 5 the Mitchell Rangers Soccer Club winner was Cabin Fever who defeated Go Pies. Thank you one and all our hard-working committee, volunteers and sponsors for our season ending meeting and every owner trainer who supported us in the last three years.
On Sunday the Longwood Club ran their yearly 'Catch On To Coursing' meeting with a great turnup according to Secretary Julie Stefanos. Many thanks go to the folk who donated their products for the winners of each event. Well done Team Longwood.

LANG LANG COURSING yesterday proved to be the battle of the fittest....
There were very competitive coursing throughout the day.Fantastic to see quite a few new faces assemble at the start of the meeting to watch the commencement of Event 1 (Western Saws Cup) with 8 dogs nominated with exceptional records for this season. We were not disappointed at all for all courses in this event were close and left you wondering 'which one got over the line first'. With so many consistent performances leaves you with 'who is going to win the 145th running of the Waterloo Cup'. We shall see in a fortnight when they all return to Lang Lang for this time honoured event. Insert is of Rosacky Thunder winner of the 2018 Western Saws Cup trainer by Darren Archer from Korumburra. _____ See you all at Lang Lang on Saturday August 18 for the heats of the Waterloo Cup followed by the WC Purse and Waterloo Plate. Sunday August 19 commences with the follow on with the Waterloo Cup, Purse and Plate then the support events which include:- GOTBA CHALLENGE, GOTBA VETERANS EVENT +++. We are very grateful to Cranbourne GRC for their sponsorship & support along with GOTBA in providing lovely trophies for the winners! Don't forget there will be delicious freshly cooked bacon & eggs rolls, etc. etc., along with fresh scones & creme available from Lang Lang's lovely ladies in the canteen. Bookmaker Gary Thomas will be on course to take all your bets!
The Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championships, Ray Boundy Memorial, Gippsland Maiden Cup and support events concluded today at Lang Lang in very mild weather and good coursing weather.
The Sylvester Doyle quarter and semi finals were well contested with the eventual winner trained by David McKenzie of Tynong North LYKA SKYWALKER too strong for BLUE IRISH trained in Lang Lang by Marion Walker. It was a rather rugged start to the course with dogs keen to make the most of getting out of the slips in front, however, Lyka Skywalker came up trumps. The result may have been different if it was a smoother release. That we'll never know but we do know that Blue Irish will make his presence felt at any upcoming meetings. Gippsland Maiden Cup was hotly contested with coursing stalwart from Kyabram Calven Russell's fawn dog BOOMING ZULUS too strong for Patrick Ryan's (Lang Lang) ADALA PRINCE. In fact all times were close in this event and as a spectator anyone of the dogs could have won. Ray Boundy Memorial.GOTHAM QUEEN trained at Devon Meadows by Sean Lithgow defeating the Darren Archer (Korumburra) ROSACKY THUNDER. The Queen certainly reigned in this event and appears to come back better than ever after her stint in the whelping box. All courses leading up to the final recorded fast times so it was any dogs race to the finishing line and hard to make a positive selection. We must thank the sponsors/donators of the events and the folk that worked on the day especially our slipper Michael Webb. _________________________________________________________________________________
CONGRATULATIONS to Team Galea with their win last Thursday night at Shepparton GRV.
Coming off his first go at coursing winning his heat of the Slips To Boxes Event at Longwood on June 3, their dog MAIN ONE went on to win in smart time of 22.00 the SLIPS TO BOXES CHALLENGE FINAL. Well done to this first time coursing dog for his trainer Ryan Galea of Brookfield. Second in the event was seasoned courser and new mother GOTHAM QUEEN trained by Sean Lithgow of Devon Meadows going down by approx., 2 lengths and to top it off for the night Team Galea came in 3rd with LOCKROD trained by Tess Galea. A very interesting day at coursing today. Longwood Coursing Club hosted the Noel Ryan Memorial Werribee Cup meeting with support events incl., NJ Smith Memorial, Slips to Boxes events +++.It was a perfect day all round, a crisp fresh morning with the sun shining through all day as the Greyhounds performed at their best with smart times recorded.
Congratulations to the winners and runners-up dogs and especially to the Cup Winner CULLQUIN BOMBER trained by Richard Anchen (Nagambie) and Runner-Up NIGHT ATTACK trained at Langwarrin by Leigh Howard. The Winners and Runner-Ups of the 4 Slips to Boxes events will go on to compete at Shepparton on Thursday June 14. We wish them the best of luck.
It was pleasing to see new trainers to coursing winning events and with dogs that had never coursed before. The new timer was an added bonus which kept everyone abreast of the times the dogs were running and some were very SLICK!
On behalf of Werribee Coursing Club I would like to thank Gary Robinson and his willing team of workers at Longwood - Julie Stefanos (Sec.), chef extraordinaire Mrs Jean Hamilton (OAM), Neil Mason, the Wetzels, J Donaldson, G Howard, R Groom, S Doust and race caller Noel Massina and if I have missed someone please accept our thanks.
Perhaps we shall see you at Lang Lang on Sunday June 17 for Week 1 of the Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championships.

Challenge final at Shepparton Take the Cake takes it all. The trip from Wagga Wagga NSW was worthwhile for trainer
Paul Strutt. Wearing the #9 guernsey exiting from the dreaded box 5 Take The
Cake went straight to the lead and was never headed.
There is a story to this greyhound who was racing was still
to learn how to race truly. Trainer Paul
Strutt took advantage of our Catch On To Coursing meeting at Longwood in early
April since then Take The Cake has not looked back. Trainer Paul Strutt said he is really impressed
with how the coursing has turned Take The Cake around and last night’s win was
evidence of that.
For trainers that want to give their dogs a change of
scenery or a freshen up coursing is the perfect alternative. _________________________________________________________________________________ The first week of the Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championship, Ray Boundy Memorial and the Strathbogie Maiden Cup at Longwood today. Where would coursing be with its huge team of volunteers?
Put bluntly we wouldn’t get one course commenced.
The Executive of the National Coursing Association of Victoria Inc. would like to thank the volunteers at all of our coursing clubs. Each and every one of you contribute significantly to our wonderful sport of coursing.
Our tracks are kept in pristine condition, our facilities too are maintained by some industrious volunteers, not to mention our wonderful canteen staff who keep us feed and hydrated. Coursing day staff, from the judge, to the slipper, to the lure driver, to the club steward, to the slips steward and the catching pen staff all give their time freely.
At every coursing meeting you will see people volunteering their services to keep our coursing clubs active. In turn give our canine charges something different to let off some steam and let the wind flap around their ears and run at top speed.
BENALLA TRIALLING - For those wishing to trial at Benalla the week before their cup meeting which is May 28, trials are planned for the Sunday morning May 21. Any queries feel free to contact either Murray Hehir or Andy Scott, for their phone contact details click here
Pleased to advise that the 2017 Coursing Calendar has now been approved by GRV and is included on our site. ALSO at the same time there has been an upgrade by GRV of the Coursing Grading Rules & Regulations. A special thanks to the team at Sandown GRC., Greg Miller and Yvette Oudman for decking out the marquee. This area created a perfect atmosphere for the coursing stalwarts to talk about old times and to hear that coursing has a strong following in the Greyhound Industry. Thanks also to GRV for your participation and to the coursing folk who travelled down from Kyabram, Longwood and particularly the Charlton CC to be a part of a memorable night and witness Marty Sait's presentation of the Noel Banks medal.
BENALLA COURSING CLUB met recently at their Annual General Meeting. As a result the locals have rallied together to keep the club functioning. Our executive are extremely pleased to hear this as Coursing is a vital part of the Greyhound industry.

The Executive of the National Coursing Association of Victoria with deepest regret, advise the passing of Lionel Kraemer. Lionel was a respected member of the Lang Lang Coursing Club committee, and a Lang Lang delegate and Executive member of the NCAV. Lionel was a passionate greyhound man for over 35 years training winners on the track and coursing ground. Some of his best charges included the Group 2 & 3 winner Phantom Devil, the Healesville Greyhound of the Year Bomber Lucas, and the 2015 NCAV Coursing Greyhound of the Year Noise Attack. Lionel's dream had been to win the Waterloo Cup and he had hoped he would have one last chance on his favourite coursing ground at Lang Lang in 2016 with Noise Attack, but sadly that was not to be. Our thoughts are with Cath and family at this sad time.
For interested parties who have been awaiting notification of the progress of the cumulative Coursing Points for 2016 they are NOW uploaded. These Points are cumulative and will require updating after the GOTBA & Waterloo Cup results. The graph is only the highest scoring Greyhounds as at August 1, 2016. Don't forget to check the Flyer on our site - NEXT MEETING - for the upcoming GOTBA Cup meeting on August 7th., at Lang Lang. The GOTBA committee have increased the stake money for the main events which makes the trip well worthwhile.

Noel Ryan was a long time Committee member, past President of the Werribee Coursing Club and also a long time executive member of our Association. Noel was made a Life Member of the NCA of Victoria in 2010 and was also the winner of the 2014 Noel Banks Medal which was awarded for Outstanding Volunteer Service. Noel trained many winners both on the circle and coursing. He had a great passion for the sport and loved his Greyhounds.
Our thoughts are with his dear wife Wilma and family at this sad time. May Noel rest peacefully.
BENALLA PLUMPTON COURSING CLUB NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!
At the Benalla meeting last Sunday it was pointed out to everyone present that the club is in DESPERATE need of helpers to keep this excellent venue available to all Greyhound trainers in the area and surrounding shires. If this club folds then this will impact upon any future trials being conducted at this facility.
Firstly as a Coursing Club who are unlike their cousins on the ‘circle’ are run entirely by volunteers. Yep, people who give up their time not only on the day to conduct a meeting but at other times to conduct trials and also to maintain the track. The Benalla club would undoubtedly have one of if not the best surface and it would be a pity to see it not available because there was no one available to maintain it. If you live in the surrounding area and can help out in any shape or form you might contact their secretary/treasurer Helen O’Brien on 0431 717 038 or their delegate to the NCAV Carolyn Mills AH on 0408 317 874 to offer your support as the situation is becoming desperate.
