BEAR ‘LEFT’ WITH US – THE WEATHER WAS FINE TOO!

Celebrating the 145th year of coursing in Victoria at Lang Lang Coursing Club last weekend we saw live streaming of the Waterloo Cup final for the second time. We also saw photo finishes for the first time with some very close finishes having the judge rely on the photo.  It must be said that coursing has seen a stellar year, and these initiatives just rounded off our year in a positive manner.
The whole venue looked magnificent and the volunteers need to be commended on their achievements, it is no easy task fronting up two days in a row to conduct these types of meetings.  Sometimes Sunday night can’t come quick enough! If you were there celebrating the two-day meeting, you will know that the weather was fine.  For those who were not there and cannot believe that in the 2 days during the meeting we had two showers on the Sunday.  Yes, the weather overnight Friday and Saturday was nothing short of feral with copious amounts of rain, hail, thunder and lightning, it was nothing short of a miracle that we had two days that were perfect for coursing.  Anyone who has taken the time to head off coursing will know, always take your wet and chilly weather gear with you and most did so.  A good warm jacket and a beanie were the order of the day.

The final of the NCAV and Cranbourne GRC sponsored Waterloo Cup we saw Ray Henness’ BEAR LEFT Owned by Con Dimopoulos BL D (S: El Grand Senor D: Angel’s Chorus) defeat Dallas Massina’s BD B JULANA Owned by Chelsea Madigan (S: Dyna Double One D: Chelabella).  Julana got away from slips in perfect manner although she lost her red collar in the process.  Bear Left had to work hard and dig deep to catch the elusive young bitch puppy.  Coming from behind he caught her just past the driving tower and powered home to take the holy grail of coursing for 2018.  Bear Left had won both of his events earlier in the season at both Benalla and Longwood.  He had put his paw up and told the coursing fraternity – I can do this coursing thingy!   As for Julana she has continued on from her Victoria Oaks form where she was defeated in the semi-final.  Watch out for her next season she’s but a babe still.  That was a truly magnificent display from a puppy.

We coursing folk have kept with tradition and we know someone is going to be defeated in both the first round and the second round by the eventual winner therefore we have the Waterloo Plate for the greyhounds run out in the first round and then the Waterloo Purse for the greyhounds run out in the second round.  We are thankful and fortunate to have the sponsorship of the Waterloo Cup, Plate and Purse by Cranbourne GRC for which we are most grateful.
The GOTBA for sponsoring the GOTBA Challenge and the Veterans events for this weekend.  The winner of the Plate being Heathcote trainer Jess Fothergill’s VALDAR BALE O: Joshua Formosa (S: Goodesy D: Desalle Bale) defeating Marion Clay’s owner/trained White and Blue dog BLUE IRISH (S: Banjo Boy D: Cosmic Affair) of Lang Lang.  Both greyhounds having their first season at coursing.  Then followed the PURSE going to LUNAR SHADOW a lightly coursed BK D (S: Cosmic Chief D: Canoodles) Owner/Trainer Jess Fothergill (Heathcote) take the winner’s trophy and Tyabb owner/trainer Les Week’s MICKEY RAWSON BE D (S: Barcia Bale D: Dorothy Rawson) as runner-up. Jess Fothergill’s 5-hour turnaround road trip from Heathcote to Lang Lang proved worthwhile and a handy weekend but then she’s a dab hand at the coursing caper.  After all, Jess trained Suave Odessa to take out the runner up trophy in the 2013 Waterloo Cup conducted at Longwood where we celebrated our 140th Season.
For the greyhounds run out in the third round we also conduct the GOTBA Challenge with only three dogs left to compete in the Semi Final…. Trademark Rocky was DSF with the final contested by ROSACKY THUNDER trainer Darren Archer (Korumburra) BL D (S: Vee Man Vane D: Solar Octane) O: Christopher Black has had a super 2018 coursing season winning the Western Saws Cup and then defeating trainer Robyn Massina of Bendigo BK D JUST NIMBLE IT (S: Don Chendo D: Phryne) this dog also has had a great 2018 season.
To support our program, we conducted another 7 races including the GOTBA’s Veteran’s event and this was very well received with last year’s Waterloo Cup runner up NIGHT ATTACK taking home the chocolates (can I say that – it’s OK he didn’t eat them).  The consistent Night Attack is owned by Leigh Howard and trained by Ian Rilen of Langwarrin. The runner up was trainer Sean Lithgow of Deavon Meadows BOWON APPROACH.  It was a fitting end to his season for this dog has been just missing out in his lead up courses.
The next event was the Michelle Virtue Banjo Boy @ Stud Bitch Puppy 1.  The winner PIPARAE BK B at her second attempt at coursing trained by Jeanette Imlach of Pearcedale with the runner-up MISS BLUE a BE B owned by Sonia Davis and trained by Malcolm Davis of Altona Green.

The Eglas Bitch Puppy 2 was the next event on the program with the winner being EYE WILL REIGN a smart young BK B trainer by John Paraskevas of Cranbourne South and Runner-Up to BK B SUNITA LASS trainer by John Westerlo of Clyde.
The next event the Viola Waste Dog Puppy saw a first time courser with no circle track form as a guide compete and win. What a thrill for all concerned with CEE ME ENTERTAIN BK D (S: Cosmic Rumble D: Cee Me Burst) O: Bursting Through T: Peter Borradale of Rosedale defeat GOJEK O: James Vandemaat T: Sean Lithgow of Devon Meadows.
The Winning Post Supplies Maiden Bitch was won by another first time courser ETIQUETTE BK B owned by Nicholas De La Roche and trained by John Delaroche of Cranbourne North defeat Coburg trainer Murray Collyer’s BIG MARY.

The second last event of the day Silver Eagle Maiden Dog event with two new dogs to coursing Tammy Kennedy-Harris from Somerville’s BK D FIREFLY NUTS defeating Anakie trainer Jeffrey Britton’s CRACKERJACK NATH.  A great result for both trainers.
Lucky Last event for the day the XP3020 Pet Pacific Mixed Maiden was won by TOBY SURE trained at Warragul by Neil Kelly over THREE FIFTY ONE trained at Cranbourne South by Stavros Kipirtidis.

Race caller Noel Massina and Scott Stefanos (Longwood) along with the new kid on the block race-caller Luke Humphrey’s. A massive thanks to young Michael Webb our slipper who has officiated at Lang Lang all season and to Simon Humphreys who has taken on this role at Longwood as a result of Michael Webb’s other commitments.  In the South East - LANG LANG CC, Northern Victoria - LONGWOOD CC, North Eastern region BENALLA PCC for hosting the meetings from April to August of this year.  It goes without saying that without our volunteers and the sponsors who each season support our code we wouldn’t be as strong as we are at today.

BENALLA PLUMPTON COURSING CLUB RUNS A SUCCESSFUL MEETING.

With a very small committee and volunteers the Benalla club should be proud of a wellrun day. If there were issues the public were not aware of it.  The ladies provided great food, there were exciting courses and the weather a comfortable 17deg. All day.  There were great courses throughout the day which makes for interesting results as we move in to the middle of the coursing season. EVENT 1:  MCRAE HOLDEN BENALLA CUP.  Of the 8 starters 2 dogs were relatively new to coursing the other 6 were seasoned dogs all with good records.  It was the first appearance this season for NIGHT ATTACK the runner up in last year’s Waterloo Cup who coursed twice but put out in the semi’s by the eventual winner KID RINGO. KID RINGO trained by Don Jarvis of Westmeadows with only 1 prior attempt at coursing (29/4/2018) this 2015 greyhound got better as the day went on.  His 1st course time was 16.28, 2nd., 16.34 and the final 16.25 to defeat seasoned dog CULLQUIN BOMBER trained by Richard Anchen at Nagambie.  The final going down to virtually no more than a length on the line.  It was a great course.
EVENT 2:  ROBERT BRITTON GREYHOUND TRAINING FOR ALL AGED.  Another new dog on the scene RALOO BARBARA trained at Rockbank by Wade Green with only 1 appearance under his belt this season he showed a clean pair of paws (6L) over ROGER EXPRESS in the final trained by Joshua Moody of St Albans.  In all of Raloo Barabara’s courses he clocked 16.16, 16.16 and 16.18 respectively.  Looks like Wade Green has a good coursing dog in the making.
EVENT 3: ANTHONY AZZOPARDI GREYHOUND TRAINING BITCH PUPPY. Dallas Massina of Golden Square’s Bk B, BARINYA coursed well over the day defeating reserve CELESTIAL JEWELL trained by long time coursing trainer John Westerlo of Clyde.
EVENT 4:  D TREWIN & T WOMANN MIXED PUPPY EVENT.  HOT DOT TWO in his first ever coursing attempt and trained in Warragul by Phillip Scott-Smith defeated MY DEWANA SNOWY who is trained by Dave Reid at St Albans.
EVENT 5: BARRY MARSHALL CARPETS DOG PUPPYWe saw the Calven Russell (Kyabram) ZAMBORA ANDY defeat YAKARI trained by Dallas Massina of Golden Square.  All times recorded over the day were even for these young puppies.
EVENT 6:  MGRA MAIDEN BITCHAxedale trainer Alice Peat’s BK B ELAINE AVENUE with consistent times over all 3 courses won over KISSABLE in the final trained at Balliang by Gary Manion.
EVENT 7:  ROB MAZAR MELBOURNE SERVICE CENTRE MAIDEN BITCH 2.  Desmond Trethowan (Chiltern) MIRACLE CHERRY coursed well to defeat TOTAL DIVA trained at Warragul South by Alan Tougher. This was a great final going to the wire and the decision by a head.
EVENT 8: BRAD & MEL’S FOOD & FUEL MAIDEN DOG 1In this event we saw a coursing dog of the future DAVE’S ENTITY a Knocka Norris son and trained by Dean Allsop of Cranbourne West coursed brilliantly with times in order of 16.00, 15.87 and 16.00 defeating by 5 lengths in the final JUST NIMBLE IT trained in Golden Square by Robyn Massina.  How exciting for Dean as I believe this is the only dog in his kennel.
EVENT 9: GERALD & MATT LANIGAN KENNELS MAIDEN DOG 2.  BLACK LAZARUS trained in Red Cliffs by Melissa Fullerton after recent Semi Final defeats crossed the line first by a head over RHOMBOID trained by Jason Formosa of Heathcote. It was a great final to watch.
EVENT 10: SARGENT’S PIES RESERVOIR MAIDEN DOG 3Handy chaser ARE YOU trained in Invergordon by Eddy Hamilton defeated LOVE LAUGHING trained by Mark Strahan of Bendigo.

EVENT 11: LOOT LODGE – ROD MILLINGTON MAIDEN DOG 4.  CHUM’S SPECIAL ran consistent times in his heats and trained by Evan Keene of Long Gully defeating by 5L in the final JACK’S ON DECK who is trained in Mansfield by Robert Plunkett.

It was perfect coursing weather for the first meeting hosted by Lang Lang Coursing Club for 2018.  12 events with full fields were scheduled.  Unfortunately, there were 4 scratching’s by Balliang trainer Gary Mannion resulting in a stint for Gary at the Werribee Hospital emergency ward.  News today is Gary is still in hospital and on the improve.  There were an additional 2 scratching’s on the morning of the coursing meet. It was pleasing to see new trainers travel from all areas in Victoria to Lang Lang from as far as Red Cliffs, Rockbank, Lance Creek, Moyston, Wonthaggi to name a few.  The Lang Lang club under the guidance of John Clay and his team are to be commended on the presentation of the track.  The freshly cooked Bacon & Egg rolls, sausages & beef rolls were popular with the trainers along with delicious scones and freshly whipped cream.  Very tasty indeed.

OFF AND RUNNING AT BENALLA -  29/04/2018

You couldn't have asked for better weather in Benalla on Sunday with some great coursing from our up and coming youngsters. This meeting was for maiden greyhounds and it was wonderful to see such great support with all told 133 nominations being received.  We're off to Lang Lang on the 6th May, yep that's right, this coming weekend.  So keep the nominations up.  Our sport is reliant on being supported by the participants.

A big thank you to the Benalla Plumpton CC's band of workers and volunteers who encountered a few hiccups on the way.  A job well done to the slipper Simon Humphries.  Thanks to the ladies in the canteen and I'm sure that everyone returned home very happy with their greyhound's first tilt at coursing.

If you happened to be run out early, don't let that discourage you.  Each time you take your greyhound/s coursing they become more familiar with what they have to do.  Exiting the slips is way different to exiting the boxes.  Being kept in the float is also different to being in the kennels.  Plus when you've only got one other competitor that's makes heck of a difference for their confidence.

There were queries about reserve runners.  Questions hit Facebook like.. Do I bring my greyhound? How will I know if I got a run?  Scratchings close the day prior (next week 05/05/2018 @ 4.00 pm according the Fasttrack) If there are scratchings and your greyhound is drawn in a coursing field, GRV will contact you on the Saturday.  Yes you will be contacted.

In the event that your greyhound does not gain a start please do not bring your greyhound to the track expecting a trial run during one of the breaks.  The reason being that we are scheduling 12 events and that's 48 courses up to lunch time.  Remember coursing survives because of our volunteers amongst other things but they need a break to refresh themselves just the same as your greyhounds.  "They're pretty good on the tooth"

Full report on the Winners & Runner-Ups in the events at Benalla below from Secretary Sue Delaney:-
There were quite a few new trainers nominated from all areas in Victoria as far as Portland and up to Wagga Wagga NSW.  There were 133 nominated greyhounds all told and a very pleasing number going into the season.  The Benalla club are very appreciative of the support given to them and in recognition the 12 events were named as a thank you.  The general concept to run All Maiden events early in a season is to give coursing meetings some greyhounds for our One Win Stakes to then progress to Open Class for the cup events going forward.
Our second Maiden Meeting is schedule next week at Lang Lang on May 6.

The winner of this event was KID RINGO trained by Don Jarvis of Westmeadows with the runner-up MALICK trained by Jason Formosa of Heathcote.  Event 10 – Bernie Osmond Leads Maiden Dog 5 Winner GIN LEE’S BULLET trained by Donna Beasley from Mount Cottrell and the Runner-Up SUDOKU BUDDAH trained by Alexander Whitehead of Harcourt.  Event 11 – Winning Post Supplies Maiden Dog 6 saw the Greyhounds catch the lure in their final course which as a result the stakes were divided between ROYAL SOLO trained by Derek Faulknall of Diggers Rest and RUMBLING BAJOOKS trained by Graham Glass of Kyabram both dogs having their first go at coursing.  The last event for the day Jack & Carol Westerloo Maiden Dog 7 we had a scratching of Mr Bad Example replaced by Springvale Mike.
