In 2023 the Waterloo Cup will be conducted at the Lang Lang Coursing Club. This will be our 150th year of coursing in Victoria. This year is a celebration for many things coursing. Just the fact that our Waterloo Cup was first contested at Sunbury in 1873 is reason to celebrate.
During those 150 years there are only two years that a Waterloo Cup was not contested and this was in the years 1965 & 1966 and the reason was the attitudes changes and live hare coursing was discontinued.
The coursing fraternity are an inventive ‘lot’ and some clever people got together and developed coursing as we know it today. In these early days of we’ll call it ‘modern coursing’ a drag lure was used however, in more recent times a trolley lure has also been adopted.
Coursing survived through the Covid-19 Pandemic and continues to be used as an education (and in some cases a re-education) steppingstone for many young dogs racing in Victoria. Please join us at your local coursing club during the 2023 season as we celebrate 150 years of coursing.
