We have passed the half way mark well and truly for the 2025 coursing season with the commencement of the Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championship at Lang Lang on Sunday the 13th July.
Fortunately, the weather Gods did us a favor for a change and kept the rain away until we were all on our way home. Although we had a ripper of a tail wind.
We received solid nominations of 93 for the meeting and 43 were for the Sylvester Doyle alone. Yes, it is true some people missed out on a run as the supporting two events (Ray Boundy Memorial and the Gippsland Cup) were for 16 greyhounds each.
We saw some very hand puppies entered in the puppy event and many had already shown their class in the first half of the season. The Memorial event also has some present seasons well performed hounds and also some hounds from previous seasons compete very well.
As indicated a strong tail wind in the first round saw some pretty fast times but as is the case, dogs that run fast times, can generally do it regularly. 16.35 being the best of the day which was run by Brian Fothergill’s ALSTON.
Our time-honored maiden event the Gippsland Cup to support the Sylvester Doyle and the Ray Boundy when Lang Lang Coursing Club conduct these meetings saw some greyhounds who have competed in the past. However, they had failed to win an event. They got another crack at breaking their coursing maiden status.

All in all, it was a very successful meeting and once again we all need to be thankful for the happy band of volunteers at our clubs that rock up each week for either a coursing meeting or a trial session. Yes, and big thank you to those trainers that support our part of our wonderful industry.
Many things change but coursing always seems to bring out the best in people. There’s always plenty of banter amongst the owners and/or trainers whether in the observation/marshalling yard or queuing up for some lunch.
If you’re thinking about nominating next week our ninth meeting of our 2025 season, we have another 7 events to support the continuing event. All dependent on the nomination received. Nominations close at GRV at 8.30 am Thursday 17th July.
