Yesterday began the first of our Classic events with Week 1 of the Victorian Derby and Victorian Oaks. After the first day of action we have 4 dogs remaining in each event and they are listed below.
Victorian Derby:
Linden Boots (Derek Clay), Why Mummy (Simon Mallia), Son of Rosie (John Clay) and Sultans of Win (John Delaroche).
Victorian Oaks:
Wow She’s Cute (Peter Craig), Exactly Like Dad (Paul Hammerstein), Catch Driver (Taylor Thornton) and Waverley Miss (Sarah Fothergill).
We saw some ridiculous times run from these young stars! Sultans of Win took the time honours in the Derby with Catch Driver running the fastest time for the girls. When u get down into the 16.40s you have some seriously fast dogs and these two will start favourites when the semi finals start on Sunday.
We also had two features yesterday in the Werribee Cup and the JN Smith Memorial. The Werribbe Cup was won by Super Tone (Pat Derubeis) who returned to his best with a brilliant 16.41 run in the first round before being too strong for a gallant Mister Manfredi (Chris Armstrong) in the final. In the JN Smith Memorial we saw Heard Your Words (Olivia Cartechini) beat a very consistent Two Feathers (Gary Lane) in the final. Olivia only has one dog in her kennel and shows you dont need a big team to win races. Heard Your Words celebrated his big win by eating an ice cream out of his giant trophy. Finally congratulations to Paw Danny (Grant Hammerstein) who broke his maiden. Sunday we will be back for the conclusion of the Derby and Oaks as well as the two consolation events. Depending on nominations, we expect 1-2 All Aged races and 4-5 maidens to complete the card. See you all Sunday!
